Marc McCarey grew up playing competitive golf and saw firsthand the opportunities and benefits that game can provide.

Now, McCarey is using the game to give back. And he’s about to do so on a national stage.

McCarey, an Upper St. Clair native, was recently named the Head Coach of the Special Olympics’ Team Pennsylvania, which will bring together athletes from around the state to compete in the Special Olympics USA Games this coming spring in Minnesota.

“It’s going to be awesome,” said McCarey. “I've always thought the Special Olympics organization was just a step above a lot of the charitable organizations out there. I mean, it's just pure good.”

November kickstarts the holiday season. But it’s also the month in which many top high school players give an early gift to colleges by signing with or verbally committing to their future schools.

Locally, numerous players made Division I college commitments and signings over the last few weeks, with the vast majority being players who have competed in WPGA competitions and USGA qualifying events in Western Pennsylvania.

On the girls’ side, Peters Township standout Ellie Benson signed to play at Gardner-Webb, a Division I school that competes in the Big South Conference.

JOHNSTOWN – For decades, the Sunnehanna Amateur Championship has served as a springboard for many of golf’s greatest players.

With a lengthy list of decorated past participants and champions, the annual competition continually finds ways to bolster the game of golf in the region, state and well beyond.

With that background and philosophy in mind, it became an obvious decision for the Sunnehanna Amateur Committee and Co-Chair John Yerger to allow two new exemptions — a rarity for the prestigious championship that is part of the nation’s Elite Amateur Series.

Hall of Fame

Western Pennsylvania has a lengthy, rich and storied history.

The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association celebrated its centennial in 1998. Part of this celebration was to recognize area golfers and contributors who had an impact on our history. The Western Pennsylvania Golf Hall of Fame was established in 2013 to celebrate this history. The inaugural class consisted of William C. Fownes, Jr., Jock Hutchison, Arnold Palmer, Carol Semple Thompson, and Lew Worsham.

Scholarship Fund

Founded in 1941, nearly 700 students have received a scholarship.

The WPGA Scholarship Fund was founded in 1941 and awarded two scholarships to the University of Pittsburgh and another to Duquesne University. The first Caddie Welfare Committee surfaced in 1927 and addressed issues to benefit of caddies at the various Member Clubs of the Association. Fourteen years later the movement secured enough money to sponsor its first scholars.
