WEIRTON, W.V. — The final Western Pennsylvania Golf Association major of 2025 is set for Monday and Tuesday at Williams Golf and Country Club in Weirton, West Virginia.
The 94th WPGA Senior Amateur Championship is the culmination of a fantastic season of West Penn major championships and will be the largest test for senior amateurs in the region.
“The WPGA Senior Amateur Championship has a remarkable tradition as one of the premier senior amateur events in the country,” said Terry Teasdale, Executive Director of the WPGA. “The WPGA is excited for the challenge that Williams Golf and Country Club will present such a talented field.”
The first WPGA Senior Amateur Championship was played in 1929, as many senior organizations began to form throughout the country.
Oakmont Country Club was the host venue for the first 45 West Penn Senior Amateur Championships.
George T. Gregg, Joe Wells and Paul Schlachter each won five Senior Am titles, the most ever. Schlachter’s last victory came in 2014. He also won in 2011, the only other time that Williams Golf and Country Club hosted the event.
David Brown has claimed the two of the last three WPGA Senior Amateur Championships and will be in search of a record-tying fifth victory this week.
A year ago, William Smith of Allegheny Country Club edged Rick Stimmel by a stroke, swirling in a bogey putt on his 36th hole to clinch the victory at The Club at Nevillewood.
Last year’s Super-Senior Division title was claimed by Michael Capotis with a 4-over mark, winning by three strokes.
Initially an 18-hole competition, the Senior Amateur was changed to a two-day, 36-hole event starting in 2000. It features two divisions, the Senior Division (age 55+) and the Super-Senior Division (age 65+), which was added to the event in 2014.
Williams Golf and Country Club is the only WPGA member club not geographically located in the state of Pennsylvania. Established in 1932, the club is considered one of the top courses in West Virginia.
