Mazzitelli, Wahl, Matscherz, Howard team up to win Second WPGA Women's Triple Play

GROVE CITY — A year ago, the WPGA introduced a new competition for female golfers in Western Pennsylvania in the Inaugural Women’s Triple Play event. The contest received rave reviews and tremendous participation.
A year later, the WPGA’s newest event showed no signs of slowing down Monday at Grove City Country Club.
The team of Judith Mazzitelli, Madeline Wahl, Rebecca Matscherz and Mary Ann Howard teamed up to shoot a combined net score of 12-under, beating out 21 other foursomes to win the competition’s net division championship.
“It was a team effort,” said Howard, a Diamond Run member who joined the group as a late addition when their regular fourth player was unable to attend. “Everyone contributed on different holes. We call it ‘ham-and-egging it.’ But we all contributed to play well.”
In the variable net team stroke play event, the winning group posted three net eagles in their round, including two from Mazzitelli.
Second place in the net division was captured by Kathryn Katawczik, Kristina Sandherr, Danielle Proctor and Caitlin Ross, who finished five shots off the top net spot, but did claim a win in the event’s gross division title.
The team of Diane Young, Kathy Forese, Melinda Steigerwald and Debbie Bowie placed third in the net division.
The event, a success in 2024, grew even larger this year and shows the continual increase in both recreational and competitive golf participation among females throughout the country.
According to USGA data, in 2024, over 25 percent of all active golfers in the United States were female, a sharp increase from where that number sat just a couple of years prior. Junior girls make up over 33 percent of all junior competitors in the country, as well, representing another significant rise in participation.
Overall, female participation in the game has increased by 2.3 million people since 2019, according to the National Golf Foundation. Beginner golfers are currently 39 percent female, as well.
Of the net division’s winning team, three of the four players did not participate in the 2024 version of the competition, which rose from 80 players to 88 this year. But all spoke highly of the format of the event.
“We had a great day,” said Matscherzk, the team’s lone returner from last year’s event, also held at Grove City Country Club. “This course was in beautiful condition… It’s fun to play with friends and was a lovely day of golf. It’s a neat experience.”
