VERONA — The WPGA will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its Mid-Amateur Championship Tuesday at Green Oaks Country Club.
The Mid-Amateur Championship is a two-round, 36-hole stroke play competition available for amateur players ages 25 and over.
Over the last four decades, the championship has become one of the fiercest competitions on the WPGA schedule each year and is contested annually on a top course in the region.
“The WPGA is excited to celebrate the 40th WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Green Oaks Country Club,” said Terry Teasdale, executive director of the WPGA. “Mid-Amateur golf is vital for the success and growth of amateur golf as a whole, and this championship annually brings out many of the region’s top players.”
A year ago, Ian Bangor claimed his third title with an even-par score of 140 at Butler Country Club, winning the championship by four strokes.
Historically, one player has reigned supreme in the Mid-Amateur Championship. Sean Knapp has won a record eight WPGA Mid-Amateur titles, with victories in four different decades. He is scheduled to play in Tuesday’s field and will start his round at 9:40 a.m.
Nathan Smith – one of the nation’s strongest amateur players of all-time – has won four WPGA Mid-Amateur crowns. Smith has claimed four U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships, three Walker Cups and is serving as the captain of the United States’ Walker Cup team this week at Cypress Point in California.
Bangor, Arnold Cutrell and John Jones registered wins in the WPGA Mid-Amateur Championship three times each, while Frank Fuhrer III, David Brown and Marshall Marraccini have all won the event twice.
The inaugural competition, held at Youghiogheny Country Club, was won by Fred Gibbons, who later became the WPGA’s president from 2004-2005.
Play will begin Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. from two tees, with the final groups of the first round teeing off at 9:30 a.m.
The field will feature many accomplished players in the region.
Darin Kowalski, who placed runner-up at the 125th West Penn Amateur Championship this summer, will be in the first group alongside Kevin Fajt, who he teamed up with to win the 2024 WPGA Four-Ball Championship.
Kevin O’Brien, who won the 2024 WPGA Spring Stroke Play Championship and caddied at Oakmont Country Club for Matt Vogt during the 125th U.S. Open, will tee off at 8:20 a.m.
One of this year’s WPGA Four-Ball champions, Garrett Browning, will tee off at 9:10 a.m.
Multi-time 2025 winners Arnold Cutrell will begin their rounds from the 10th tee at 8:00 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. respectively. Ten minutes later, current NHL player J.T. Miller will tee off.
