FARMINGTON — Mystic Rock at Nemacolin will welcome a large field Tuesday, as it hosts a qualifying round for the 44th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
88 players are set to compete in the qualifier, which will award three spots into the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship next month in Arizona.
Play will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the final group teeing off at 12:10 p.m.
Several notable Western Pennsylvanian’s will compete Tuesday, including defending WPGA Mid-Amateur champion Ian Bangor, who has won that regional Mid-Amateur event three times.
Bethel Park native Sean Edgar, who qualified for last year’s U.S. Mid-Amateur in the qualifying round at Mystic Rock, will play in a group with Tim Novic and Garrett Browning, who claimed last week’s WPGA Four-Ball Championship.
Former minor league hockey player Nick Sorkin will tee off at 8:40 a.m., while Austin Lemieux — the son of Penguins Hall of Fame Mario Lemieux — will begin his round at 9:40 a.m.
The 44th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, which is for players ages 25 and older, will be held at Troon Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona from September 13-18. In addition to the three qualifying positions, two alternate spots will be earned, as well.
Mystic Rock — one of two courses at Nemacolin — provides a championship caliber experience for players. The Pete Dye designed course hosted the PGA Tour’s 84 Lumber Classic from 2003 to 2006.
