BEN AVON HEIGHTS — Over a decade after their last win in the WPGA Brothers Tournament, the Denunzio brothers returned to the winner’s circle Friday afternoon at Shannopin Country Club.

The twin brothers teamed up to shoot a 3-under score of 68, winning by a stroke in the long-running West Penn team competition.

“We know each other’s games so well,” said Ronald Denunzio. “We try our best to be patient with each other. That’s such a big thing in team format. We never get too upset with each other. Whatever happens, happens. And today it worked out.”

The Denunzio’s played a bogey free round with three birdies on the card in the Chapman format event.

“Three birdies and all pars,” said Ronald. “We both know that we can get up and down. We chip and putt pretty good. It’s nice to think about that.”

Added David: “We had a good feeling that, if we didn’t make bogey, we could win.”

The duo credited their similar playing style and demeanors on the course.

“We’re back and forth a lot,” said Ronald. “We do everything together. Every team event we can play in together, we play.”

Maddox and Jace Rearic finished in second place at 2-under. Three teams tied for third place at 1-under, including Neal and Brian Mechling, Alex and Nick Turowski and Brian and Kevin Fajt.

On a sun-soaked and humid day, the event’s net division was won by Shane and Troy Susnak, who posted a net-adjusted score of 6-under in a round that featured two net eagles on the card.

William and Glenn Porter, and Robert and Joe Bulling, each finished runner-up in the net division with a 3-under mark.

For the Denunzio’s, the win marks the brother’s fourth in the competition, having also won in 2011, 2013 and 2014. Only Chick and Rob Wagner (11 wins) and George and Jack Benson (eight wins) have claimed the event more than the twin brothers from Jeannette.

“We probably look more forward to this event than any all summer,” said Ronald. “We grew up coming here. We love coming to Shannopin. It’s always been a really fun event.”
