Stefani Markovich kept the game plan simple on Tuesday, comfortably qualifying for the 63rd U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.

Markovich carded an impressive 1-over score of 72, taking Low Scorer honors by five strokes in the Qualifying round at Edgewood Country Club.

“I just wanted to keep my driver in play and put myself in a good position,” said Markovich, who registered three bogeys and two birdies on the day, finishing the final seven holes with pars.

“I knew the greens were very receptive, so that I could take a little extra club and be more relaxed swinging into it and put myself in good positions around the pins. Putting isn’t my greatest, in terms of confidence. I wanted to give myself uphill, towards-the-pin putts.”

Markovich, a native of Ontario Canada and a strong player for years in that region, made the four-hour drive in hopes of returning to a USGA national championship a decade after playing in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

“I’m not down this way very often,” she said. “It’s maybe been 20 years since I’ve been in this area. But I do like Donald Ross (course) designs. I came in positive. And I come from a course that’s pretty hilly. Could that have been a benefit? Who knows.”

Stephanie Urban of North East, Pa., who finished as the Low Scorer in last year’s qualifying round at Ligonier Country Club, placed second at 6-over. Jane Wymer of Butler, Pa. was third at 11-over.

All three women clinched a spot in the 63rd U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur, to be held September 13-18 at The Omni Homestead Resort’s Cascades Course in Hot Springs, Va. Danielle Proctor (14-over) and Randi Lichtenstein (16-over) earned alternate spots for the championship.

“I’m very excited,” said Markovich. “The U.S. championships are always such a treat and are always on special golf courses. We’re spoiled. And I look forward to the match play component, if I qualify. I love that. It would be awesome to be there and represent.”
