Severns captures Girls' Match Play title

INDIANA - The matchup between a No. 1 and No 2 in any sport many times creates great theatre and excitement.
It happened again Tuesday at Indiana Country Club in the finals of the 6th West Penn Golf Association’s Girls Match Play.
Mya Morgan, a rising senior at Elizabeth Forward High School, was the top seed in the eight-player event. Sophia Severns, a newly minted graduate of Peters Township High School, was No. 2.
And the two produced a heck of show on a day that featured the semifinal and final rounds, with one-hour rain delay that forced an early-evening conclusion.
Morgan roared out of the gate again, winning three of the first five holes to put Severns on her heels quickly. That was a trademark of Morgan’s, who won the first nine holes of her opening match and the first four of her semifinal match.
But that’s where the similarities ended with Morgan’s previous matches.
Severns took off on a run, winning the eighth through 10th holes to go from one-down to three up and the game was on.
“I just kept going head-to-head, winning more holes, winning and winning,” she said. “Usually once I start making pars and birdies, I really go off.”
After Morgan got back into a tie on 13, Severns immediately re-took the lead with a birdie on 14 and closed the match with a short birdie putt on the 17th.
“When I was down 3 early, I really wasn’t thinking about it,” Severns said. “I don’t really let people get to me. I’m just really, really excited about winning.”
For a high schooler, Morgan showed a great deal of patience and poise both during the round and after.
“I was straying from my game plan and just didn’t play my game,” she said. “Sophia played fantastic. I’m proud of her and how her game has matured.”
It was Morgan’s second straight runner-up finish in the event.
“Looking at it, I finished my final round last year the same way as this one,” Morgan said. “Last year, on a few holes, I made stupid decisions, and I did the same thing this year.”
