LATROBE — This time around, the competition was a little stiffer for Bailey Donahue. But the result was the same.

Battling through temperatures that reached the mid-90’s, Donahue shot an even-par score of 72, claiming the 15 & Under division of the 65th WPGA Boys Championship Tuesday at Latrobe Elks Golf Club.

“It’s good, especially since it was a long round and really hot,” said Donahue, a 15-year-old from Pittsburgh. I made a lot of two-putts. The greens were fast downhill, but my speed was good all day.”

For Donahue, the win was his second in the Boys Championship, having won the 10 & Under division in 2019. But that division only had two players in it that year, meaning that Donahue only had to beat out one opponent.

On Tuesday, he toppled a field of 12 players in the 15 & Under Division.

“There was one other person, and it was a nine-hole match that year,” Donahue recalled. “This feels much better.”

Donahue’s day began with a bogey on the first hole, but he quickly rebounded with three birdies before the turn. He played 2-over on the back nine, making him the only player in the tournament to shoot even-par or better.

“The Par 5’s were pretty good scoring chances,” Donahue said of the 3rd and 4th holes. “I made two birdies there.”

Max Scally took home the 13 & Under division with a 7-over score of 79, while nine-year-old Jonah Honess captured the 10 & Under division with a nine-hole score of 54.

The WPGA Boys Championship, which began in 1959, has been won by some of the top amateur players to come out of Western Pennsylvania and has been a springboard to success in junior golf for many.

It also brings out a traditionally strong field of young players. But this test was likely similar to what a player like Donahue sees just about every time he hits the links.

“I have five brothers and we all golf,” said Donahue, whose older brother, Daniel, plays at John Carroll. “It gets very competitive. There’s a lot of money going around. It makes the nerves a lot less because you’re always playing a competitive match.”

In the 15 & Under division, Sam Schneck and Luke Ferry tied for second place at 5-over, while Santino Washburn was fourth at 6-over.

At 18-over, Camden Gustin placed second in the 13 & Under division.
