LATROBE — Started in 1959, the WPGA Boys Championship has served as a premier competition for boys ages 15 and under in Western Pennsylvania.
On Tuesday, youth golfers from around the region will compete for the 65th WPGA Boys Championship at Latrobe Elks Golf Club.
The competition is 18 holes of stroke play, with three divisions for boys ages 14-15, 13 & Under and 8-10.
20 competitors are scheduled to play in the Boys Championship this year.
The 14-15 age group will play for the James “Skipp” Potts Trophy, while the 13 & Under division will compete for the James Simons Trophy.
The winner of the Ages 14-15 Division will receive exemption into this summer’s C.R. Miller Match Play Invitational.
Last year, the competition was held with just two divisions. Aaron Didjunas shot a 1-under score of 71 to win the 15 & Under division at Youghiogheny Country Club. Colin McKenzie captured the 13 & Under division, carding a 10-over score of 82.
The WPGA Boys Championship is meant to serve as an introduction to the Association's championship program and is open to all junior boys age 15 or younger who reside in Western Pennsylvania or belong to a WPGA Member Club.
The Championship has compiled an impressive list of local players that continued to capture titles after serving their apprenticeships in junior golf.
Former champions include Nathan Smith (winner of four USGA Mid-Amateur Championships), Arnold Cutrell (winner of six individual WPGA titles) and William Miller (winner of both the Boys & Junior Championship in 2004).
Two players have won the Overall Championship twice, John Aber (1983-84) and Donald Thomas (2002-2003).
Tom Nettles (2007-08) and Luke Miller (2009-10) have captured the age 13 & Under trophy twice. In 2012, Luke Miller joined Donald Thomas and Easton Renwick as the only players to capture victory in both age categories.
