Second round of West Penn Open suspended due to rain

SEWICKLEY — The wet Western Pennsylvania spring continued Tuesday, as heavy rains fell on Sewickley Heights Golf Club, resulting in the suspension of the 122nd WPGA Open Championship.
Play was initially halted at 11:38 a.m. due unplayable course conditions. When the course dried enough for play to resume at 1:11 p.m., players made their way back to the course. But the resumption of play did not last long, with most groups finishing one or two holes before a second band of rainstorms ended the round for the day.
The second round will resume Wednesday, with play to begin at 7:30 a.m.
Following the completion of the second round, a cut will be made to reduce the field to the top 30 players, including ties. Final groups will be formed when the second round concludes.
With soft conditions, scores were strong in the second round, with a three-way tie emerging atop the leaderboard.
Three professionals in Beau Titsworth, Easton Renwick and Connor Schmidt all sit at 6-under, followed tightly by a pair of amateurs in Scott Jordan and Nathan Piatt, who are each 5-under.
Jordan led the West Penn Open after the first round with a 5-under mark. Piatt, meanwhile, put together the best score of the abbreviated second round at 6-under through just eight holes played.
“Everything went well today,” he said. “Everything was working well. I made six birdies in eight holes. The putter was hot. I made all of my putts. And I was hitting it pretty close, for the most part.
“It’s going to be soft tomorrow, so I just need to keep firing at pins with no spin. These greens are pretty severely sloped from back to front. So I just need to flight them in there close and make those uphill putts.”
Piatt was the winner of last year’s 124th WPGA Amateur Championship and the 2024 WPGA Player of the Year. The Upper St. Clair grad will now look to complete a rare feat, winning the West Penn Amateur and Open in consecutive years.
“I’m just trying to win them all,” he said. That’s the goal every week. It doesn’t really matter what you’re playing in. Just try to win.”
