JOHNSTOWN — Carol Onufro was elected the 105th President of the Board of Directors of the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Thursday at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Onufro, a native of Johnstown and member at Sunnehanna, recently served as the Vice President of the WPGA’s Board of Directors for the last year during Ken Flisek’s term as President.

“We are delighted to welcome Carol Onufro to the role of President of the WPGA Board of Directors,” said Terry Teasdale, Executive Director. “Carol’s commitment to bettering the game of golf in Western Pennsylvania, as well as her goals to make golf more accessible and inclusive will undoubtedly make for a successful term over the next year.

“The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association would also like to thank Ken Flisek for his dedicated service in his multiple roles on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee over the last decade and wish him the very best moving forward. Ken’s leadership during the 125th Anniversary year of the WPGA has been invaluable.”

Onufro is the second woman to occupy the role of President since the WPGA’s founding in 1899, joining Claudette Graham of Allegheny Country Club, who served as President in 2018.

“It is an honor to accept this role with the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association,” said Onufro, who has also served in leadership positions in the Women’s Golf Association of Western Pennsylvania and Sunnehanna Amateur. “There is such a tremendous, storied history in the last 125 years of the WPGA, and I view it as a privilege to play a part in continuing and advancing the legacy of West Penn Golf.”

Mary Beth Morrissey of Connoquenessing Country Club, who served as the Association’s Secretary over the last year, will fill Onufro’s position as Vice President. The two will become the first female President and Vice President duo in the WPGA’s history.

“I think we’re the perfect complement to one another,” said Morrissey. “Carol has got a great business background. She’s very organized and I am definitely a ‘tell me what you need to do and I’m going to make sure it gets done’ person.”

Tom Reading of Fox Chapel Golf Club has been elevated from the Association’s Treasurer to Secretary and Paul Bangor of Montour Heights Country Club will join the executive committee, taking over the role as Treasurer.

The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association’s Board of Directors implements positional one-year term limits for Executive Committee members.

Other members of the Board of Directors will be Mike Betts of Longue Vue Club, Robert Davis of Chartiers Country Club, Brian Fajt of Hannastown Golf Club, Christian Sheehan of Pittsburgh Field Club, Crawford Berthold of Champion Lakes Golf Club, Kassie Segmiller of Diamond Run Golf Club, Erik Barzeski of Whispering Woods Golf Club, Craig McRoberts of Valley Brook Country Club, Jay Spang of Youghiogheny Country Club and Andy Stoughton of Oakview Golf Club.
