PRESTO — The final Western Pennsylvania Golf Association major of 2024 is set for Monday and Tuesday at The Club at Nevillewood.
The 93rd WPGA Senior Amateur Championship is the culmination of a fantastic season of West Penn golf, and will be the largest test for senior amateurs in the region.
“The Senior Amateur Championship has a storied tradition as one of the top senior amateur events in the country,” said Terry Teasdale, Executive Director of the WPGA. “The WPGA is excited for the challenge that The Club at Nevillewood will present such a talented field.”
The first WPGA Senior Amateur Championship was played in 1929, as many senior organizations began to form throughout the country.
Oakmont Country Club was the host venue for the first 45 West Penn Senior Amateur Championships.
George T. Gregg, Joe Wells and Paul Schlachter each won five Senior Am titles, the most ever. Schlachter’s last victory came in 2014, the only other year in which The Club at Nevillewood hosted the competition.
David Brown has claimed the last two WPGA Senior Amateur Championships and will be in search of a record-tying fifth victory next week.
A year ago, Brown shot a 1-over score of 141 to win at Chartiers Country Club. Rick Stimmel — one of the United States’ top-ranked senior amateurs — and nine-time WPGA Amateur champion Sean Knapp finished second and third, respectively.
Knapp and Stimmel will both be in Monday’s field, as well.
Last year’s Super-Senior Division was won by Robert MacWhinnie, who shot 7-over to edge Ron Hinish by a stroke.
Initially an 18-hole competition, the Senior Amateur was changed to a two-day, 36-hole event starting in 2000. It features two divisions, the Senior Division (age 55+) and the Super-Senior Division (age 65+).
The location for the event is special, as the current President of the WPGA’s Board of Directors, Ken Flisek, was the Golf Course Superintendent at Nevillewood for over 32 years. Flisek’s term as President ends two days after the Senior Amateur’s conclusion.
