EXPORT — Connoquenessing Country Club ran away with their third consecutive WPGA Jamison Cup Inter-Club Finals title Monday at Westmoreland Country Club.
The quartet of Ryan Meyer, Jacob Marquardt, Garrett Schlick and Mike McCullough combined to shoot 13-over par to take the competition, which pitted seven of Western Pennsylvania’s top clubs against one another.
“It feels pretty good,” said Marquardt. “We didn’t exactly finish how we wanted to, so it was a little bit nerve-racking up until we finished up. But I think we all played pretty good, pretty confident.”
Oakmont Country Club finished second, shooting 21-over. Edgewood Country Club’s team was 24-over, good for third place. Westmoreland’s representatives placed fourth, The Kahkwa Club fifth and Butler Country Club sixth.
Marquardt shined in the opening round, firing off a 3-under score of 68.
“I felt like the putter worked a little bit the first round,” he said. “I hit a couple close, so that made it easier. The putter was the main difference between my first and second round.”
Schlick (71) and and Meyer (74) also had competitive scores in the morning. Meyer was tops in the afternoon, posting a 73, while Marquardt (76) and Schlick (77) did enough to secure the comfortable victory.
“It’s unreal the caliber of player we have,” said Schlick of Connoquenessing, which also won a year ago at Sewickley Heights and in 2022 at Bedford Springs Resort.
“Myself and (Marquardt), we just joined there three years ago. We joined because we like the track. We didn’t know there were this many good players. Today was a representation of how many good players we have out there.”
The individual champion was Edgewood Country Club’s Shane Stewart, who shot a 2-under score of 140 to beat out Max Feinberg of Westmoreland by a stroke. Marquardt ended up third, while Meyer and Jon Pratkanis (Butler Country Club) tied for fourth.
Following a first round score of 72, Stewart matched Marquardt’s low round score of 68 in his second 18 holes.
“I made a couple of good putts that helped me jump start the second round,” said Stewart, who had never played Westmoreland Country Club before Monday. “And I hung in there when I hit some off shots. I got pars when I needed it and finished it off with a couple of birdies.”
While Edgewood didn’t get to take home the ultimate team prize, Stewart was able to bring some hardware back to one of Western Pennsylvania’s oldest clubs.
“It’s awesome,” he said. “I’ve been out there for four years now. It’s a great club with really good people and good players. We’ll have better finishes down the road as a team, but this was fun to represent them.”
