Two WPGA competitions — one new and one old — will take place Monday.

In Grove City, the WPGA will hold its newest competition, the inaugural Women’s Triple Play, at Grove City Country Club.

Around 85 miles away, the 83rd WPGA Four-Ball Championship will be hosted by Hannastown Golf Club.

Coinciding with the growth of women’s golf participation, the WPGA Women’s Triple Play Tournament will be the WPGA’s fifth competition open to women’s and/or girls.

The format of the event is 18 holes of variable net team stroke play. Teams will consist of four players each. Scoring is Best 1 ball of 4 on Stroke Index Holes 1 thru 6, Better 2 balls of 4 on Stroke Index Holes 7 thru 12 and Better 3 balls of 4 on Stroke Index Holes 13 thru 18.

The competition, which features 80 players, is open to all female amateur golfers residing in the Western Pennsylvania region, with a Handicap Index® and with membership at a WPGA Member Club.

Women’s amateur golf great Carol Semple-Thompson, who played in this month’s U.S. Senior Women’s Open, will be among the players to participate Monday.

In Hannastown, the 83rd WPGA Four-Ball Championship will celebrate the most common form of play in Western Pennsylvania.

A 36-hole competition, the Four-Ball Championship has become a staple of the WPGA’s competition schedule.

Started in 1939, the first two competitions were won by L.R. Siebert and Jack Benson, shortly before the start of World War II.

John Birmingham, Jack Brand and Arnold Cutrell have all been a part of a winning team four times. PGA Tour professional Rocco Mediate was on a winning team in 1982, his only WPGA title.

Other winners include Nathan Smith, Rick Stimmel, Frank Fuhrer and Sean Knapp.

A year ago, the team of Brendan Shaughnessy and Brody Taylor captured the Joseph Shea Alexander Memorial Trophy by shooting 17-under, edging three other teams by a stroke.

Shaughnessy will be in the 23-team field this year, playing alongside Michael Bell.
