PITTSBURGH - A golf tournament with added, historic meaning, the 75th WPGA Brothers Tournament is set for Friday at Shannopin Country Club.

Started in 1950 to honor two brothers killed in battle during World War II, the Brothers Tournament has become a yearly way of honoring the two men and celebrating the bond formed by family.

The contest — consisting of 18 holes of Chapman format stroke play — will tee off at 8 a.m. Monday with 27 teams set to compete.

The first Brothers Tournament was won Bud and Dick Semple, for whom the Association's WPGA Century Foursomes Championship is now named after.

Brothers Chick and Rob Wagner have won the event a record 11 times. Impressively, their wins have spanned four different decades with the first coming in 1979 and the most recent coming in 2017. They are set to compete Friday at Shannopin.

A year ago, the team of Scott and Todd Green claimed victory in the Brothers Tournament, shooting 4-under and edging Mike and Chris Papciak and Parker and Tanner Johnson in a playoff.

All three of those teams are scheduled to play Friday.

Matt and Torrey Schwartz won the Net competition at 3-under and will compete at Shannopin this week.

Also included in this year’s field is the team of Alex and Nick Turowski. Nick, a rising freshman at West Virginia, is coming off a victory at Shannopin in the WPGA Junior Championship in June and just participated in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship earlier this week in Michigan.

Ronald and David DeNunzio, who have won the competition three times, will tee off at 9:50 a.m. Parker and Tanner Johnson, who won the event in 2022, will start at 8:20 a.m.

2021 champions Ryan and Tim Ungarean and 2007 champs David and John Dzuban are also in the field.
