INDIANA, PA - Nathan Piatt had already posted a great summer in WPGA competitions.

The winner of the 124th West Penn Amateur Championship last month, Piatt added hardware to his shelf Wednesday by finishing as the Low Am in the West Penn Open.

The former Radford and Upper St. Clair graduate shot 8-under, including a final round 67, to finish fourth overall.

“I played well,” said Piatt. “I played better overall on the back nine all three rounds. I got off to a really rough start in the first round. The second round I just parred it to death and today, on that front nine, it felt like a couple over just because those pins were pretty gettable.”

Piatt shot a 72 Monday and sat 1-over. He came back by shooting 9 strokes under par over the next two days.

“I hit a lot of good shots and had a lot of good looks that didn’t go in,” he said. “I really ramped it up on the back nine all three rounds. It’s not always how you start, it’s how you finish.

“I knew what I had to do. I had to play some good golf and make a lot birdies. After the rain the greens were soft and they’re pure, too. So, you can make a lot of putts.”

He was the top amateur over Kevin Fajt, who finished 6-under. Scott Jordan and Matt Mattioli were each 5-under.

“It’s cool,” said Piatt, who plans to turn professional for the fall and link up with the PGA Tour’s Q-School. “It’s fun to play in these events. I grew up playing in them and now it’s finally paying off, all the work.

“I won at Chartiers and had a good week here. I gave it a chance, so it’s nice. It’s nice to play some good golf.”
