APOLLO — A friendly competition is still a competition. And such was the case Tuesday.

Todd Renner got to know that feeling when he finished his round and learned that he would be continuing his round with a playoff against fellow Allegheny Country Club member Bob Crnjarich, who he considers a “good friend.”

“Before the round, I thought that if I could make four birdies, that would be enough,” said Renner. “I walked in and Bob said, ‘did you birdie the last hole?’

“I said, ‘yeah, does that mean anything?’ And he said, ‘yeah, we’re tied.’”

Renner went on to top Crnjarich in the two-hole playoff, winning the Senior Division of the WPGA’s Senior Series #2 competition at The Links at Spring Church.

“Bob and I played all winter this year,” said Renner. “I played 68 rounds this winter and I think he was with us for all of them. We play a lot of golf together.”

Both competitors shot a score of 34 in the Stableford scoring competition.

“I didn’t even know it was Stableford until we were on the first tee,” said Renner, with a laugh. “I didn’t look at the sheet carefully. But, as soon as the starter said that, I knew that four birdies should work.”

With Stableford scoring, players earn points based on the score they shoot on each hole. It adds a unique wrinkle to the otherwise standard round of golf. Needless to say, Renner enjoyed the style.

“This is my first playoff and my first senior win,” he said. “I haven’t been playing well lately, until Friday.”

While the temperatures didn’t spike until the late stages of the event, the wind was a force for all players throughout.

“It got really windy on the back nine,” said Renner. “It was a cross wind, too. You just had to play into it.”

Paul Bangor of Montour Heights Country Club placed third in the Senior Division.

Kevin McCarthy of Hannastown Golf Club won the Super-Senior Division by registering 33 Stableford points. Sam Berkovitz and Ron Hinish placed in the top three, as well.

For the second time this year, Pat Petit of Manor Valley Golf Club won the event’s Net Division, racking up 40 Stableford points. Petit also won the Net Division in Senior Series #1 in April and has a couple more wins in Senior Series events in previous seasons. Dave Flohr and Robert Strohm finished second and third, respectfully.
