Bangor and Varga win Brand, Graciano and Crawford three-peat in Semple
By WPGA • May 21, 2019
High and swirling winds led to a challenging day of golf at Longue Vue Club for the WPGA Foursomes Championships. Ian Bangor and Jeff Varga improved on their runner-up finish from a year ago to win the 65th playing of the Fred Brand Foursomes Championship, and Perry Graciano and Jim Crawford led wire-to-wire to win their fourth Semple Brothers Foursomes Championship.
Bangor and Varga sat one shot back of three teams after their 76 (+6) in the morning, but their afternoon 73 (+3) was good enough for a three-shot victory over Sean Byers and Brett Young.
The duo was quick to address just how difficult the wind made Longue Vue Club. “Mid-round I told Ian that 13-over might win this thing, and we just had to keep fighting,” said Varga.
The winning total of 149 (+9) was six shots higher than last year’s winner, a testament to the tough conditions. In the 24th Semple Brothers Foursomes Championships, it was business as usual for the team of Perry Graciano and Jim Crawford. On Monday, they captured their third straight title and fourth in six years. The pairing took a three-shot lead into the afternoon after a morning 71 (+1) and distanced themselves even further from the field after a second round 75 (+5). Jeff Hovanec and Joseph Corsi finished five shots behind for runner-up honors.
Next up, the WPGA will be at The Country Club of Meadville for the first of four WPGA Amateur Qualifiers on the TurnpiketoOakmont. For all the latest Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Updates, follow the WPGA on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
