At its fall meeting, the WPGA Junior Committee approved a change to the eligibility for the West Penn Junior Championship and C.R. Miller Memorial Match Play Invitational. Juniors age 18 and younger as of the start of the competition are now eligible to compete.
Prior to the change, juniors age 17 and younger were eligible to compete in both competitions. The change begins with the 2017 season.
The United States Golf Association has also changed eligibility to juniors 18 years of age and younger as of the start of the championship for both the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.
Eligibility for the Williamson Cup Matches has also been changed to include juniors age 18 and younger.
There is no change in the eligibility for the West Penn Boys Championships. The three different championships will remain: Age 9 and younger, Age 13 and younger, and Age 15 and younger. Competitors are able to compete in any division above the age requirement each is eligible for.
The WPGA’s junior competition schedule starts on June 22 with sectional qualifying for the U.S. Junior and Girls’ Junior championships at Shannopin Country Club. The West Penn Boys will be held at Chartiers Country Club on June 28. The West Penn Junior will be held at Hannastown Golf Club on July 5, and will be followed by the C.R. Miller Match Play July 10 & 11 at Fox Chapel Golf Club. The Williamson Cup Matches will be conducted by the WPGA at Pittsburgh Field Club August 7-8.
The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association has conducted the Junior Championship since 1921. The C.R. Miller was started in 1974 by Ritchie Miller in honor of his father, Charles R. Miller, and was conducted yearly at Fox Chapel Golf Club until 1994 when the association started to administer and conduct the event. The Boys Championship has been conducted annually since 1959, the 13 and Under division was started in 1996, and the 9 and Under division was started in 2015.
